From ASHS to Inclusive Education: Anam’s Journey of Growth

For Anam Vahora, the path from Albany Senior High School (ASHS) to a career in teaching and student support has been one of learning, resilience, and community.

Leaving ASHS in 2017, Anam is now proud to be working in teaching and student support, a journey that has taken her across New Zealand and Australia, where she gained a diploma in early childhood education and a certificate in school-based learning. Her role allows her to create inclusive learning spaces, assist students with different learning styles, and contribute to their growth and confidence.

Since graduating ASHS, Anam has worked as a childcare assistant, completed studies in early childhood education, and gained valuable experience in classrooms. She is currently studying with Open Polytechnic while completing a placement at Albany Primary School.

Lessons from ASHS

Reflecting on her time at ASHS, Anam says it helped shape her both personally and professionally.

“I developed a strong foundation for learning and a passion for helping others. During my time there, I gained not only academic skills but also values such as resilience, teamwork, and leadership. The supportive environment encouraged me to embrace challenges and build the confidence that would later guide me in my career.”

Some of her most memorable experiences came through Impact Projects, where she was able to work directly alongside teachers and students. “During my placement at a school, I was able to gain valuable real-life work experience in an educational setting. This opportunity allowed me to step into the role of a support person, where I worked directly alongside teachers and students. I assisted with classroom activities, provided one-on-one support to learners who needed extra guidance, and helped create an inclusive and engaging learning environment.”

Teachers Who Made a Difference

She credits her teachers with making a significant impact: “Every teacher I had at ASHS contributed to who I am today. Some encouraged me academically, while others supported my personal development and confidence.”

Looking Back

Anam describes her time at ASHS as “truly memorable and impactful.” Beyond academics, it gave her the chance to connect with supportive teachers, develop confidence, and discover her strengths. “The sense of community, encouragement, and guidance I received at ASHS played a big role in shaping who I am today, both in my studies and in life.”
