ASHS Update – Welcome back to Term Four!

Kia ora e te whānau,

Well, as you know, school will not be physically opening tomorrow however learning and assessments will resume online. I know this will be a disappointing start to Term Four for many, however I remain confident that we are in a great position to continue deliver learning and assessments effectively and we have plans in place to support all of our young people to work towards their academic target for the year.

A message from our ASHS Board Chair:

“We know everyone (staff and students) would prefer to be back in school to start this important part of the year, we have confidence in ASHS’s systems and processes and – most crucially – in our staff and students to come through this with commitment, focus and aroha”. – Philip Voss, ASHS Board Chair

At this point and time, we are have not had any further updates about NCEA or any further changes to Learning Recognition Credits, UE and/or examinations. I believe we will hear more in the next few days and I will share as soon any updates as soon as they are received. In the mean time, I encourage you to support your young person to get back online tomorrow, and to follow the timetable below. We will continue to update plans on a weekly basis this term, as we respond to any and all further level announcements and changes.

This Wednesday we will also be sharing our online version of the annual Impact Project Showcase. Make sure you are following our ASHS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ashsnz) to see all of the fabulous top projects for the year. Well done to the Impact Project leadership team and student committee who have not let the ongoing disruptions get in the way of this celebration of learning. Also, congratulations to all of our students for continuing to evolve your projects throughout lockdown.

This week’s timetable is below. Note – Wednesday will look a little different due to the Impact Project Showcase. All the details about this will be shared with students at their Tuesday morning Tutorial meeting.

Below is the info I shared last week outlining the current situation for schools as outlined by the Ministry of Education. This will be updated as further information comes to hand.

  • The Auckland region will remain at Alert Level 3 as it currently stands, for another week. Cabinet will review this decision on Monday 18 October.

  • For schools in Auckland, they will not reopen to all students on the 18th and further public health advice will be provided next week. Schools in Auckland will however be open on Monday 18 October for distance learning.

  • For all Alert Level 3 regions, there are immediate COVID-19 testing requirements for school staff prior to their return to school.

  • From 1 January 2022, schools and early learning services and providers will need to ensure only vaccinated staff and support personnel have contact with children and students. They need to have their first dose by 15 November.

  • Schools will also need to maintain a COVID-19 vaccination register.

  • This includes home-based educators and anyone in the home aged over 12, and all those support people in our schools and early learning services such as teacher-aides, administration and maintenance staff.

  • Face coverings are required to be worn by Year 9 to 13 students when on school transport at all Alert Levels.

  • Face coverings continue to be required by students and staff in secondary settings (Year 9 to 13) at Alert Level 3, including in middle and area schools. Children under 12 years of age remain exempted from wearing face coverings.

And remember…
Be kind.
Stay safe.
Stay home.
Wear a mask if going out!
We got this team!!
