In Term 1, Albany Senior High School (ASHS) launched the Basketball Boys Academy – a new initiative designed to create connection, mentorship, and opportunity through sport. The programme was the brainchild of basketball coach Matt Cowie, a driving force behind the school’s wider Basketball Project, which focused on supporting young tāne in meaningful ways.
With generous support from the Heart for Youth Trust, the Academy provided ākonga from ASHS and Albany Junior High School the chance to train with Lucas Schnuriger, a BNZ Breakers coach, over nine weeks. Every Monday morning before school, the boys turned up not only to sharpen their skills but also to build confidence, connection, and culture.
“What stood out most to me was the strong emphasis on community impact – it was about so much more than just basketball. I could tell that for some of them, this was something they might not have come to if it wasn’t free – but once they were there, they found something they enjoyed and that took their minds off other things,” said Schnuriger, reflecting on his time.
Over the term, the sessions became a positive and energetic space where the boys could be themselves. There was hype when someone landed a tough shot, casual games with friends before training, and a buzz that reminded everyone why sport matters.
“These boys reminded me of the pure reason why everyone starts playing,” said Schnuriger. “You’re building something really special up here – creating impact through community, prioritising culture and environment first, and letting basketball come second.”
A massive mihi to Heart for Youth, Coach Schnuriger, Matt Cowie, and all the staff who helped bring the Academy to life.
