ASHS Impact on Lake Pupuke

Posted by on 16 April 2013

are having an impact of Lake Pupuke.

You might be forgiven for thinking that Albany Senior High is like any other secondary school in New Zealand, but you'd be wrong. Not only is the school a leader in successfully delivering the demands of the curriculum through its three strands; specialist subject, tutorial and impact projects, but it has had national recognition for teaching through inquiry-based learning. Every Wednesday the timetable is suspended and students undertake projects that benefit the community. They can choose to work alone or in groups, but most importantly, they are the drivers of their own passions. The extended project links into some aspect of the curriculum but quite often students will develop skills and talents beyond what can be offered in a classroom. Three Year 12 students have chosen to work on cleaning up Lake Pupuke and its surrounds. Their passions were ignited when they saw an article in the North Shore Times in February highlighting the increasing levels of rubbish and the deteriorating state of the lake. The group's leader Callum Sands says he's “proud to be involved in a project that positively impacts the wider North Shore community.” Their project involves creating a Facebook page, research from Auckland Council about the response to waterway pollution and the production of a book showcasing all their hard work. Within the group they delegate specific tasks so as to focus on individual learning goals they want to achieve by the end of the project. Another member of the group is Jason Smith, who has deliberately chosen to work on this impact project as he is interested in conservation and protecting our natural environment. Their project mentor Marwan Juma helped the group focus on success criteria which in essence are milestones that give the students a sense of direction from start to finish. Marwan's careful guidance ensures the project will stay on track and delivers a final product in which the school can be proud. He says, “It’s important that students feel a sense of achievement as it is quite often impact projects that helps build their confidence in their specialist subject.” This new approach towards building a lasting student/mentor relationship, allowing them to work on project of their choosing and developing new skills along the way, is the future of education in New Zealand. Five or so hours of learning every Wednesday will pay off when the top eight project are chosen at the end of every year. In some cases their stakeholders are so interested in their projects that a job offer has been extended to the student. In other cases the success of their impact project has opened doors, like admission into university and scholarships.

Learning Dialogues 2013

Posted by on 3 April 2013

  • Tuesday 9 April         from 3:30 - 7:50 pm
  • Thursday 11 April      from 12:30 - 2:50 pm (SCHOOL WILL FINISH EARLY ON THIS DATE)
It's that time again to make an appointment for a Learning Dialogue with your son or daughter's Tutor Teacher. Although the appointment is made with the Tutor teacher, it is your son or daughter that will guide you through the process.

Learning dialogues are held at the school on the above dates and are one way that tutors and parents can work together to support the learning of the students at Albany Senior High School. A Learning dialogue is a 20 minute, 3-way conversation about learning, led by the student, and is an opportunity for them to take real responsibility for their learning and for identifying what is required for them to take their learning further.

To make a booking, please go to http://schoolinterviews.co.nz/ and enter the code 63739

Start Dates for 2013

Posted by on 29 November 2012

The school Office will re-open for 2013 at 8:30 am on Monday 21 January. Once again this year we are starting the students one year level at a time.

STAGGERED START DATES FOR 2013
  • Year 13 Only - Tuesday 29 January 2013 in school uniform, ready for a 9:00 am start and a full day.
  • Year 12 Only - Wednesday 30 January 2013 in school uniform, ready for a 9:00 am start and a full day.
  • Year 11 Only - Thursday 31 January 2013 in school uniform ready for a 9:00 am Powhiri. This new year level will be welcomed on to the school with a Powhiri and we welcome family and friends who would like to share this occasion with their Year 11 student.
  • Whole School - Friday 1 February 2013 ready for a 8:50 am start on a normal Friday timetable.
UNIFORM
We have a very attractive uniform that has been designed to suit and to respect the young adults who attend our school. Students should be wearing a school skirt, shorts or trousers and one of the school T.shirts or the blouse / shirt. Students may purchase and wear their own black jerseys and their own black jackets. We would like the jerseys and jackets to be in PLAIN black.

Please be ready for the new year. The Uniform Shop, at the school, will be open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on Wednesday 23 January 2013. The uniform can also be purchased on line. To find out more about on line purchasing please please click here.

We are very keen to focus on conversations with your young people that really matter. We want everyone to be comfortable. We want to build relationships between students and teachers that are a key to good learning. We do not want to be put in the position of uniform police. That will seriously damage the wonderfully warm relationships we have developed already and that the students are benefiting from. The uniform is very reasonable and we want your support to make sure your student is wearing it and wearing it well.  That is the respect and support that you and your student can show us.

The students are older now so in the first week of term 1, 2013  if a student presents at school not in uniform they will be asked to go home and get the correct gear. I am sure that will not be necessary.

We have a very high expectation that every student at Albany Senior High School will be in uniform.

STATIONERY
The stationery list for 2013 is available by clicking here

This list is a guide only as senior students have more input in to how they organise their course notes for the year. Some students may even prefer to bring along a laptop or netbook of their choice and this is certainly encouraged at Albany Senior High School. It would be advisable to delay purchasing stationery until students have confirmed their courses in the first three days of school. During these three days, they will also meet with their subject teachers where they will have the opportunity to finalise any stationery requirements.

Have a safe and relaxing holiday and we look forward to another extraordinary year at Albany Senior High School.
