At Albany Senior High School (ASHS), wellbeing isn’t just something we talk about – it’s something we actively support, every day.
A hugely important part of our Wellbeing Centre is our team of therapy dogs: Meg, Tucker, and Mousse.
Meg, Tucker, and Mousse aren’t just here for pats and belly rubs; they’re an important part of the wraparound care offered by our counselling team. Together, our trained staff and canine companions create a safe, calm, and welcoming space for all students and staff to feel seen, supported, and empowered.

Why Dogs? The Science Behind the Support
Research shows that interacting with dogs can significantly reduce stress, lower heart rates, and support emotional regulation – all of which can be incredibly helpful for rangatahi navigating the ups and downs of school life. Just a few minutes spent with a dog can help students feel calmer, more connected, and better able to cope with the challenges they’re facing.
Whether it’s supporting a student or staff member through a tough conversation, helping de-escalate big emotions, or simply providing a moment of comfort in a hectic day, our therapy dogs offer a gentle, non-judgemental presence that complements the professional care provided by our counsellors beautifully.
Meet the Team
Meg, 3-year-old Chocolate Cocker Spaniel
Meg is a Field Trial Champion and was born in Tauranga – but her real strength is making people feel like they matter. Outgoing, affectionate, and always up for a cuddle, Meg brings warmth and energy into every space she enters. Students love her playful spirit, and endless belly rub requests.
Tucker, (almost) 2-year-old Chocolate Cocker Spaniel
Tucker might come from drug detection and customs working lines, but at ASHS he’s a soft, sweet soul who’s happiest receiving gentle chin scratches. His quiet, calming presence is perfect for students who need space to ground themselves or regulate in a safe, peaceful environment.
Mousse, 10-year-old Chocolate Labrador
Mousse is a gentle elder who’s been supporting student wellbeing for years. Born in the Waikato, she’s incredibly loyal and intuitive – always knowing when someone needs a little extra love. Students often seek her out during breaks for comfort, connection, and (of course) her famously waggy tail.
While the dogs certainly bring joy and smiles to our students, their role is deeply embedded in our broader counselling approach. Working alongside our experienced counselling team, the therapy dogs help students open up, regulate emotions, and engage more easily in the support available to them.
They’re also a drawcard for students who may be unsure about seeking help. For many, a visit to the Wellbeing Centre starts with meeting a dog – and often turns into something much more meaningful: connection, reflection, and growth.
A Safe Space for All
The ASHS Wellbeing Centre is a place where students can be themselves, seek support, and find tools to thrive – and our therapy dogs are a valued part of that journey. Whether students and staff are dropping in for a quiet moment, working through something with a counsellor, or just needing a break from the hustle of the day, Meg, Tucker and Mousse are there to help make things a little bit brighter.
