Health Science, Humanity, and Real-World Relevance: A Fresh Look at Level 3 Health at ASHS

A refreshed Level 3 Health course at Albany Senior High School (ASHS) is opening new doors for students interested in careers in medicine, biomedical science, physiotherapy, nursing, psychology, and other health sciences.

With many ASHS graduates going on to study health-related disciplines at top universities across Aotearoa, Level 3 Health for Health Science supports that academic journey – offering a strong foundation in scientific knowledge, research skills, and cultural understanding, all grounded in real-world issues.

One of the standout features of the course is its relevance to current health challenges in Aotearoa. Students investigate topics like mental health, public health initiatives, and the effectiveness of health promotion programs in Aotearoa New Zealand, developing strong analytical, research, and communication skills as they evaluate the systems and structures that shape community and individual wellbeing.

A new practical standard gives students the opportunity to explore injury treatment and rehabilitation through the lenses of anatomy, physics, and physiology – offering insights relevant to medicine, physiotherapy, and sports science.

For those interested in mental health, a psychology-focused unit examines how psychological wellbeing affects physical health and recovery.

Students also explore ethical dilemmas in medical practice, compare Western Scientific Medicine with Complementary, Alternative, and Traditional approaches, and develop cultural competence and critical thinking – skills increasingly valued in today’s global health landscape.

In Level 3 Health for Health Science, students also develop valuable research and analytical skills. They will learn how to gather, analyse, and interpret health information from a range of sources, examine statistics to better understand patterns and trends, and engage in meaningful group discussions that unpack complex issues. Students will work independently as well as in small and large groups to explore big ideas, challenge assumptions, and develop shared understandings. They’re also supported to reflect on their own beliefs and values, while learning to critically consider perspectives that differ from their own.

Expect a mix of collaborative tasks, analytical activities, and real-world problem solving – all designed to deepen understanding and prepare students for the kind of thinking required at university and in health-related careers.

The refreshed Level 3 Health course is a strong example of ASHS’s academic approach: rigorous, relevant, and deeply connected to the world beyond the classroom.
